Bolstering War readiness

Bolstering war-readiness of the army, the government has given financial powers to the Vice Chief of the Army Staff to procure critical spares and other ammunitions in times of emergency.

The decision by the government came in the wake of deficiencies found during the Uri attack, last year. It was found that the army lacked defence preparedness to fight an intense and short war of 15 days.

The emergency powers given to the vice chief will enable him to procure 46 types of ammunition and some spares for 10 types of weapons. There is no restriction on the amount to be spent.

Such powers will ensure timely procurement of ammunition cutting down on time-delays and ensure self-sufficiency for the armed forces during emergencies. The powers are currently applied in specified areas only.

Further, the government is planning to provide such powers to the Navy and the Indian Air Force.
