What is education? What is its objective? Is it confined to particular limited area and fields? Does it help us to live a peaceful life? The philosopher Bertrand Russell defines education as “a certain outlook on life and the world.”Peace is not limited to the security-sector reform of a society coming out of a war or conflict. The world society supports promoting peace, taming violence and fostering happiness of future generations. These are the results of education as a learning process. Of course, the primary intellectual virtues like nobility of spirit and autonomy cannot be underestimated. We want a future generation engendered with a certain character and moral and ethical armed with nobility of spirit and education is an important medium for this. Education is a pursuit of moral wisdom and not confined to an academic pursuit.
In his Lecture Notes on Pedagogy, Immanuel Kant says the aim of education “must be the moralisation of man”. His educational theory is based on moral progress of humanity which will foster intellectual maturity. The objective of education is to develop man s natural gifts and as Immanuel Kant puts it “advance the whole human race toward its destiny.” Our modern world is dull to truly understand the meaning of being fully cultured or well-educated. Soldiers and diplomats are the peacekeepers of today s world.
Schools and universities focus on academics and don t teach individuals to become loyal and obedient. The need of the time is moral leadership and not just political governance. We need to promote “cultivation” of humanity.
