Elephant Corridor Vs Mining

The government of Odisha is yet to execute its plan of forming an elephant corridor in the state. Seven years ago, the state government has identified 14 corridors that provide safe movements to the elephants without any disturbance. Yet, due to the pressure of mining lobby, the government had not notified the management plan for the corridor.

Notification by the government will give a legal sanctity to these corridors and mining activities will be banned. It has already spent over 20 crore rupees on the management of the corridors over past five years.

The Odisha government had recently filed an affidavit in National Green Tribunal stating that issuing notification for elephant corridor will not solve the issue of elephant conservation. It further said that, it will re-plan the conservation efforts based on the report of Asian Nature Conservation Foundation – a not for profit organization involved in the conservation of Asian elephants in South and South East Asia.

Advantages of a corridor
•    It helps in conservation of elephants
•    Having undisturbed movements help in reducing man-animal conflict
•    It helps increase genetic diversity
•    Increase in population density
•    Habitat expansion

Threats to corridor in Odisha
•    Mining
•    Quarrying
•    Highway construction
•    Laying of railway lines
•    Overhead electric lines
