Export sector and digitization

The Commerce & Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman believes that Election Commission of India (ECI) should consider the proposal for state funding of elections to fight the influence of cash and black money in the elections. The government has done the requisite to promote and protect exports and incentivize the sector to address its problems due to weak external demand. While the government appreciates the positive attitude displayed by exporters in the country in welcoming the demonetization policy, it is now expected from them to shift to non-cash payment systems for doing their transactions. It is important for the exporters, especially those benefitting from membership of the Export Promotion Councils (EPC) supported by Commerce Ministry, to ensure that accounts are opened for all their workers, and that wages be deposited in those accounts. It was surprising for the Ministry officials to apprehend that many workers still did not have accounts, when recently informed by the exporters. Although there is no written order, it has been communicated that, the Commerce & Industry Ministry and EPCs have to ensure that they or their members cannot pay cash for their transactions. An arrangement is in place for tea plantations whereby the deposit of money by the tea garden owners towards workers  wages will be accepted by the District Magistrates in an existing bank account of the district administration, which would ensure its disbursal to workers by the tea garden owners. The country is now moving towards a less-cash economy. We are encouraging people to be open and transparent about their dealings and operate in a cleaner manner. .
