For a Sustainable Harvest

Often it is a case of over-harvesting of fish by our countrys fishermen. They hunt for fish even during the breeding periods of fish leading to depletion of fish stock in the seas. Due to this, fishing activity is leading to sparse catches and hurting the livelihoods of the fishermen.

Hitting on an idea to create demand for certain fish in certain seasons and leaving the rest of the fish to grow in the seas, a team of researchers from Wildlife Biology and Conservation, Wildlife Conservation Society-India and the National Centre for Biological Sciences have developed a calendar for fish that helps promote sustainable consumption of sea food.

The calendar named Know Your Fish will detail the types of fish available to consume in a particular season. Currently, the calendar shares the data of fish along the west coast of the country.

Details of the calendar
• It is a monthly calendar (www.knowyourfish.org.in)
• It gives details about which fish to avoid or which one to eat based on their breeding seasons
• Each species is given a vulnerability score based upon their harvesting patterns and the species ability to increase their population
