India Skips Belt and Road Forum

The two-day Belt And Road Forum, the Chinese attempt to showcase it s biggest ever global infrastructure push, began in Beijing on Sunday. India boycotted the summit as a mark of protest against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through the Pak occupied Kashmir(PoK). India alleges that the CPEC corridor is an infringement of its sovereignty rights.

India is the only major country not participating in the event, which saw the joining together of 29 heads of states and other high level delegations from more than hundred countries.

India even termed the massive project as little more than a colonial enterprise which would result in debt ridden economies in South Asia.

Inaugurating the event the Chinese president invoked the five principles of peaceful co-existence or Panchsheel  as the key to the success of the Belt and Road initiative (BRI). The Panchsheel is a series of principles which formed the bedrock of the relationship between  India and China in the 1950 s. Invoking Panchsheel is particulary significant in the context of India choosing to skip the event.

Xi Jinping highlighted that the Belt and Road initiative will enhance the cooperation between China and the world on the five principles of peaceful cooperation. Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif , in his address signaled his willingness to take part in a dialogue process with India regarding the China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC). The summit also saw the participation of US, Japan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
