The Indian Navy had got its own floating dock with the launch of FDN-2. The vessel was developed by Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) at its Kattupalli shipyard.

FDN-2 is the first indigenously built floating dock, but not the first for Indian Navy. The Indian Navy already has in its service a floating dock.

Features of FDN-2:
• Its length is 185 meters and width is 40 metres
• It has the capacity to dock any kind of vessel including submarines and Naval Ships having a displacement of 8,000 tonnes and with up to seven metres of draughts
• Though there is an exception for aircraft carriers and tankers
• Ships can be docked at FDN-2 both during the day and night
• Total cost of constructing the ship – Rs. 468 crores

The new vessel will be based at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This will help the navy in augmenting its technical repair capabilities as navy is looking to operate many umber of ships and submarines from the islands.
