Last Chance for Untrained Teachers

Lok Sabha by passing the Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, has given a last chance for untrained teachers who are teaching in schools across the country to get required qualifications.

The amendment to the Right to Education Act, 2009, allows untrained teachers to acquire eitherD. El. Ed. (Diploma in Elementary Education) or B.El. Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education)qualifications till March 2019, to retain their jobs as teachers.
To become an act, the bill must pass through Rajya Sabha and later get presidential assent.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar who introduced the bill in the Parliament explained that due to the implementation of SarvaShikshaAbhiyan and RTE act, many new schools have come up across the country and many teachers with no proper degree were hired. They were give five years’ time to acquire requisite degrees. But, many teachers in both private and government schools are yet to get degrees. The Minister said the bill is the last chance for them to get their degrees or else they will be disqualified for working as school teachers.

Also, the Minister suggested those who need degrees to use Swayam portal, a massive open online courses portal, to get theoretical knowledge to pass the exam and obtain degrees.
