Swachh Gramin Survey 2017, Bharat moving towards ODF

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation released a sanitation survey of rural households which was undertaken by the Quality Council of India between May and June this year.

Key Findings of the survey:

• Survey covered 4626 villages across all states and found 62.45% of the households had access to toilet.

• 91.29% of the people who had access to toilet also used it which shows change in sanitation behavior.

• Almost all rural households of Kerala and a Haryana had access to a toilet.

• Northeastern states of Sikkim, Manipur and Nagaland were top performers with 95% of rural households having access to toilet and Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand had 90% of toilet coverage.

• States of UP and Bihar are worst performers in terms of sanitation coverage.

Other initiatives by The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation:

• The minister of Drinking water and sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar announced, to instil a competitive spirit at the ground level the ministry would start ranking all districts in terms of sanitation coverage and solid and liquid waste management.

The rankings of the same would be announced on October 2 when Swachh Bharat Mission completes three years.

• The ministry had drawn plan to celebrate a “Freedom from Open Defecation Week” on the run up to 70th Independence Day.
• The ministry is planning to declare 24 villages by the banks of river Ganga as model Ganga villages or called Ganga grams.
