The significance of elections over referendum

The political parties and system in India has been on its toed ever since the Election Commission announced Assembly elections in five States: Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur. A NDA win will of course settle the questions raised on success of demonetization.

A democracy is by and for the people. But nothing can be more destructive for a democracy than uninformed and quick decisions on a certain issue. The civil society has an important role to play while deciding and electing a government to rule and govern the country. Civil society organizations watch the government s actions in terms of omission and commission and issue report cards and social audits. A vote is of immense consequence. Elections provide a chance to voters to exert their opinions and views. People have to get out of shackles of identity politics and fetters of caste and religious divisions.

The Assembly elections in five States provide immense opportunities to citizenry to engage with the various possibilities and parameters of power. Let us not waste this chance by swinging in the wind of the popularity of the Prime Minister. Electing a right candidate is a hard choice. The importance of elections cannot be reduced by conflating it with referendum.
