Voluntary Review Report on SDGs

In its Voluntary National Review Report to the UN Forum on Sustainable Development, the Central government has stated that it is setting up a panel to monitor the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.

The panel will be Chaired by the Chief Statistician of India.

Highlights of the report
• The government with the help of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is preparing a dashboard to strengthen the mechanism of monitoring the progress of SDGs.
• As many of the goals are indirectly linked to public services provided by the government, it has decided to consider data collected by private agencies too in monitoring SDGs.
• Steps are being taken to strengthen the statistical systemof the county through adequate financial and human resource investment.
• Already to measure progress of SDGs, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has developed a draft list of national indicators. These will be finalized as national indicators after receiving inputs from the public.
• For identifying challenges and good practices, bi-annual reviews with the State governments will be held.
• To help formulate appropriate policies for specificgeographical areasandgroups, emphasis is being given to setting up a transparent monitoring system andimproving data availability.
• The data must be more disaggregated, broader and available at shorter intervals of time.
