A Second Term for Rouhani
The landslide victory of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in the re-election shows a strong endorsement by the people for his reformist agenda and his policy of engaging with the outside world. The victory is all the more significant considering that the clerical establishment was backing his hardline rival Mr. Ebrahim Raisi. Rouhani, a moderate cleric, was elected for the first time in 2013 as a consensus candidate for both the moderates and centrists against the hardliners. His second victory shows that the Iranian people vests great faith in his reformist policies and engagement with the west. However, there are several challenges waiting for Mr.Rouhani in his second term as the real power is still vested in the hands of the clergy under Ayatollahs. He has to tread his path carefully while taking gradual reforms for more civil liberties and for economic growth.
