CASUALTY OF A DISEASED NATION
The disease outbreak of chikungunya, dengue and malaria has become an annual affair in the country. As the same story of overcrowded hospitals, under-prepared government struggling to grapple with the magnitude of the problem repeats every year, it indicates the level of State planning in public and private sector to address these outbreaks every year. The enormity of social and personal economic costs in terms of healthcare costs, suffering of patient, loss of productive days etc are there for all to see. An efficient and effective health support system as per World Health organization (WHO) consists of six key health systems – medicines, service delivery, health worker, information, finance and governance. We know that nutrition, health are inextricably linked to each other. And health is important if the country is to benefit for its burgeoning demographic dividend. Failure to improve upon our health system and provision of adequate nutrition to the youth of the children is a major disservice to the advancement and progress of the nation. The health system should not become a casualty to efficiency gains. The shrinking public investment in social sector is not the way to go about it. With the country standing at the cusp of demographic dividend, the country must work sincerely towards building a healthy health support system.
