EVM hackathon to dispel security concerns
The Election Commission of India has challenged political parties to participate in an EVM(Electronic Voting Machine) hackathon on June 3, amidst concerns raised by certain parties regarding the manipulation of the voting machines. Even though it is difficult to carry out a tampering attempt considering the strict administrative safeguards in place, it will always be prudent on the part of the commission to constantly improve the design and security features of EVMs. Indian EVM is a singular, hardware-firmware led, machine and it does not depend any software or any networked components. Election Commission has taken several steps like time-stamping of key presses, dynamic coding in second generation machines and self-diagnostics in the third generation machines, to ensure that EVMs are tamper proof. The commission has also pledged for the deployment of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails(VVPAT) through out the country starting from 2019, adding another layer of accountability. The hackathon challenge should be seen as a step to ensure the confidence of people in Indian EVMs.
