Fusing Elections at Centre and State
The idea of one nation, one election holding simultaneous elections for state and centre is swaying over the country. The Prime Minister says that the cycle of continuous elections happening in the country at either the Centre or state level hinders developmental process and affects the good governance of the country. This idea was also supported by the Election Commission taking into account the saving in money, time and energy. In contrast to the prevalent belief that the holding of simultaneous election for state and centre will affect the federal structure of the country, it might actually help in greater coordination between the state and centre. India s parliamentary democracy is a strong constitutional entity which will not slip into the unitary mode just because of simultaneous elections. Some data shows that there is a tendency for voters to vote for the same political party at both centre and State level, it is nave to assume that this will be a general trend every time the elections are held. The advantages of holding simultaneous elections outweighs its disadvantages it would immensely reduce the burden the exchequer, avoid the frequent use of police and government officers for maintaining law & order during elections on election duty in different states. If the political consensus can be built for the process of simultaneous elections, the roadmap can be laid down in next five years. People can also give advices on myGov app. Given its advantages, the idea can be at least given a serious consideration.
