INDIA - PLAYING FIELD IN GEOPOLITICS
International diplomacy is not a zero-sum game! A foreign policy must be determined by national, systemic and decision-making factors. Amidst this, it must strive to maintain a balance and coherence. Multilateral forums like NAM, SAARC, BRICS, BIMSTEC etc have become indispensable today for conducting international diplomacy. India has sought the membership of Wassenaar Arrangement, ASEAN, NSG and SCO, recognizing the importance of being inside such powerful organizations rather than being outside it. The Indian Prime Minister might have given NAM a miss this year but that doesn’t mean NAM is on its way to end. It is still relevant for India. Similarly, SAARC may look sidelined along with Pakistan but being the most important country in South Asia, India has much higher stakes in SAARC than any other country. India’s foreign policy must keep evolving according to needs of time and global shifts. Relationships are not cast in stone. The same applies to ideologies. India’s needs to manage its relations in the South Asian region and the world and in tandem with not-so-peaceful rise of China. India stands to lose out a lot if it continues to look at world developments through the narrow prism of terrorism. India needs to build up and showcase its ‘human assets’ as a powerful engine pedaling its economic growth.
