Indian foreign policy - looking at the big picture
The recent events in global era show how tactical considerations have overcome strategic thinking in Indian foreign policy. Look how the Modi foreign policy started with inviting SAARC leaders for Prime Ministerial swearing-in ceremony, focusing on neighbourhood first, improving Chinese-Indian and selling India s growth story globally. Today that energetic foreign policy lay in tatters. India is leaving no stone untouched on isolating terrorist state Pakistan at global stage, which has led to deteriorating relations with its all-time defender China as well and a low ranking of 130 in World Bank s Ease of Doing Index doesn t say much about Indian growth story either. All that India seems focused at is spending diplomatic energy attacking Pakistan-backed terrorism, getting the U.S. to make statements about Pakistan-based terror which they gleefully do before returning back to business with Pakistan. Why is India reducing the country s foreign policy focus to just terrorism? Is that important enough to sacrifice other milestones like economic diplomacy, foreign direct investment, institutional reforms, global partnerships etc.? Is it rational to further ground our relations with China? India needs to think deeply and strategically and stop wasting time and resources over short-term tactical gains.
