Liberalism the casualty of growing xenophobia
The prevalent view is that progressive politics and liberal ideas are threatened under the onslaught of rising hatred, anxiety, unemployment, insecurity, and xenophobia. There is a growing sense of economic, cultural and social anxiety in the world. Scaringly, this is turning into a hateful opposition to modern, liberal and progressive of human rights, secularism, multiculturalism, LGBT rights, etc. The ordinary citizen is insecure of losing his job to an immigrant, anxious about his financial security and suspicious of multiculturalism. And he cannot be faulted on these terms. The problem arises when these legitimate anxieties are manipulated by vested groups like right-wing forces to breed ideologically and politically expedient xenophobia and hatred. These right-wing forces have used both the elitist nature of liberal values and the failing neo-liberal economic logic to instigate the popular anxiety, underlying fear and anger against the wealthy and the elite towards liberals and “outsiders”.
