According to BJP leaders, questioning the surgical strikes is tantamount to seeking Pakistani citizenship. The country cannot question military s action and seek for evidence corroborating the surgical strikes. Anti-trust is anti-national. Open dissent against national government is sedition. While some are arguing that government should not take credit for military actions, others are content with Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) official statement, having complete faith in Army. But in a democracy, citizens have the right to question every tool and instrument used by government. And Army is only one such tool used to meet policy objectives. It s a different debate that government is advertising the episode for electoral gains. It is ironical that the same government that is taking credit for Army s action chooses to hide behind it in face of human rights violations committed by the very same Army. The disquieting rise of aggression surrounds us: in JNU dissenters, in Kashmir violence, ban on Pakistani artists, cow vigilantism etc. Deviant behavior represents danger around us and there is heightened pressure to fall in with government security narratives. The military should not be questioned because it affects their morale. But doesn t morale come from proper equipment, training, professionalism and rational monetary compensation? Instead of massaging military s ego, perhaps the need to invest in proper training and equipment for the military will lead to greater security for the nation.
