Paper trail and elections
With a number of political parties making complaints against Electronic Voting Machines, the the Election Commission may have to opt for a paper audit trail. For procurement of voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines for cross-checking of EVM results and using it in the next 2019 Centre elections, about 16 lakh VVPAT machines will be required. While Election Commission has repeatedly assured voters and political parties about the procedural and technical safeguards with regards to manipulation of EVMs, the addition of the VVPAT machine to the process will add another layer of accountability to the electoral procedures and machinery.
