Supreme Court Directives on uploading of FIRs
The Supreme Court has made it mandatory for the FIR to be uploaded within 48 hours by the police. This is for protection of both accused who may not have any idea about the basis of allegations as well as the victims of crime who can confirm that their complaint has been placed on record. Fulfilling its role as a guarantor of fundamental rights guaranteed to the citizen by the constitution, the Supreme Court has been active in its drive to ensure that police arrests of individuals are kept at minimum and if taken into custody, the accused citizens are accorded with civilized treatment. The court aims at protection of both privacy of citizens and national security. But such steps to curb police arbitrariness often face backlash as furtive resentment by the police and administrative community. Also issues such as logistics and web connectivity exist in rural areas while uploading the reports. The solutions and alternatives must be found. The court directions must be adhered to in full letter and spirit.
