The Changed Landscape in India - Afghanistan Relationship
The Afghanistan s foreign policy seems to be under a dramatic course correction particularly in respect of gauging and reasoning Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Recently, on his visit to Delhi, Mr. Ghani, President to Afghanistan praised a book of C. Christine Fair, Fighting to the End: the Pakistan Army s Way of War, characterizing Pakistan as a “greedy state driven by ideological motives.” Voicing his disillusionment with Pakistan, Mr. Ghani conveyed that he had lost hope that Pakistan will deliver Taliban to the table. Pakistan has neither reined in Taliban nor succeeded in negotiating with it. In a stern warning to Pakistan he has hinted that if Pakistan continued restricting Afghan trade with India, Afghanistan would consider restricting Pakistan s access to Central Asia. This state of relationship with Pakistan is pressing Afghanistan and India back together into a strategic partnership. The lifting off of sanctions on Iran has proceeded to developments in completion of building of Chabahar port along Iran s coast. This port is expected to boost trade between India, Iran and Afghanistan and improve India s access to central Asia. India and Afghanistan are working on an agreement granting several attack helicopters, tanks, artillery, ammunitions and transport helicopters to Afghanistan. U.S. has supported increased India-Afghanistan engagement. But given its increased insurgency, Afghanistan is rotting from within and that is what needs to be addressed quickly.
