The End of A Civil War and Beyond
When the government of Colombia signed peace agreement with the left wing guerilla forces of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia( FARC ), the world rejoiced over the seemingly peaceful future for the country after decades of violence and bloodshed. The Columbian President Juan Manuel Santos was even awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his bold steps to sign the peace agreement in which the guerilla forces agreed to demobilize and for the transition to a civilian political party. However the deal received set back in a closely fought referendum. But, after months of further negotiations a revised agreement was signed between the government and the FARC rebels and they began disarming their units. In the last week a group of 12 rebels formally became Colombian citizens which is definitely a milestone in the five decade long civil war. However everything is not hunky-dory. Some of the rebels fear retributions from right wing groups and are not willing to give up weapons. Also the retreat of the FARC rebels from the forested rural areas created a vacuum which criminal groups are trying to occupy. The President has to face these challenges with the same resolve with we which he concluded the peace deal.
