The assembly polls and union budget 2017-18
The Centre had sought to shift the date of presenting budget to February 1 from the traditional end date of the month of February. With announcement of Assembly elections to be held from Feb 11 to Mar 8 to the five state assemblies, the Opposition has approached the Election Commission (EC) to postpone the presentation of the Union Budget for the next fiscal year 2017-18, till the completion of polls. The Opposition argues that the Modi government may use the budget for doling out populist sops to attract voters . But the voters are not that gullible and they decide and vote based on some long-term performance metrics.
