• Lord Mountbatten became Viceroy to India in March 1947 and proposed Mountbatten Plan for partition of India.

• The plan led to the enactment of the Indian Independence Act on 18 July 1947.

• The Act had divided British India into the two new and fully sovereign dominions of India and Pakistan, with effect from 15 August 1947.

• Eastern Bengal, Western Punjab, Sindh and North-West Frontier Province would be included in Pakistan.

• According the Act the British Government would transfer all powers to these two Dominions.

• A Boundary Commission was formed to demarcate the boundaries of the provinces of the Punjab and Bengal.
