Second "Heart of Asia" Meet

Second "Heart of Asia" conference aims at strengthening regional cooperation in fighting terrorism and implementing commitment made at the Istanbul summit held in Kabul.

The conference was attended by 14 ministerial and high-level delegations from the ‘Heart of Asia’ countries, 14 ministerial and high-level delegations from the supporting countries, and 11 high-level delegations from regional and international organizations.

With NATO’s combat mission ending in 2014, the region’s countries are being called on to help stabilize Afghanistan by joining forces to resolve regional problems such as extremism, drug-trafficking, poor coordination on economic issues and, most importantly, terrorism.

In view of the aim to promote a secure and prosperous region as a whole, nations agreed to work together to ensure that the security interests of all regional states are addressed peacefully and sustainably. In this context, the countries re-emphasized the determination to help Afghanistan overcome the challenges it faces on the way to achieving stability, peace and a self-reliant economy.

The nations further announced the continued support towards training, equipping, capacity development and sustainment of the ANSF during the Transformation Decade 2015-2024 after the withdrawal of troops from the Afghanistan.

The nations recognized terrorism, extremism, separatism, drug smuggling as a serious challenge for the peace and stability of the nation. Thus with a view to the principle of common and shared responsibility, nations agreed to strengthen cooperation with Afghanistan, as well as regional and international partners, to counter the threat posed by the illicit production, trafficking and consumption of drugs.

Turkey pledged that it would continue its efforts to contribute to stability in Afghanistan.

The Kabul conference is a follow up to the regional conference on Afghanistan held in Istanbul in November 2011. It started the so-called Istanbul process for promoting regional cooperation and sustainable economic growth.
