China bid to stem the tide at Asean
The Southeast Asian nations have agreed on a code of conduct to prevent armed clashes over the South China Sea. The agreement was reached at a meeting of Foreign Ministers in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The meeting concerning the issue of contending maritime claims was held in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital to relieve the nations of the tensions caused by the dispute.

The Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen urged Southeast Asian countries to do more to promote mutual economic growth and security and called for a code of conduct in the South China Sea to be implemented. The code would spell out rules governing maritime rights and navigation in the South China Sea and will also cover China, which does not belong to ASEAN.  That’s why the ASEAN nations sought China’s approval to the code of conduct.

China, on the other hand, insists that the dispute should only be resolved directly between rival claimants and it warned Southeast Asian nations against discussing the row at a regional security forum where other countries would also be present. But it has expressed willingness to discuss with the ASEAN, a potential South China Sea code of conduct aimed at reducing tensions.
