CAG finds discrepancies in coal block allocation
Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) report has caused another roar as it comes to reveal that the government has a Rs. 1.86- lakh crore loss to the exchequer by not ensuring transparency in coal blocks allocation during 2004-09.

Even the Prime Minister has come under the scrutiny of the Comptroller and Auditor-General, as the report points to serious discrepancies during his tenure as the Minister of Coal in the period 2006-09. The PMO was also held suspect as it delayed the introduction of competitive bidding, even though the Ministry of Law and Justice had cleared the process.

The biggest beneficiaries of the flawed coal blocks allocation is considered to be Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Power Limited (RPL). The CAG held responsible the Ministries of Power and Coal for giving post-bid concessions to RPL for its 4000-MW Sasan mega power project. The CAG report states that this not only vitiated the bidding process but also conferred undue benefits of Rs. 29, 033 crore on the developer.
