• Question: What were the basic mantras of your success?

Guriqbal: My family support, my planned studies and work hard for the ultimate good of achieving Civil Services.

• Question: When did you start preparation for the IAS Examination? When should one ideally begin thinking about preparing for this exam?

Guriqbal: I made up my mind to choose Civil Services as my career option during my internship days in GMC, Amritsar and stated with reading newspaper thoroughly, specially HINDU editorials. One should start preparation minimum 1 year before the plans to take the exam.   

• Question: What were your strategies for the lengthy syllabus of General Studies for both Prelims and Mains?

Guriqbal: I followed the three stage preparation as my mentor K. Siddhartha guided me, these stages were – Basic, foundation and analytical level.

• Question: What were your optionals? What where the basis of selecting these optionals?

Guriqbal: My optionals were Geography and Psychology. Interest in the subjects, availability of good study material and more scoring point were the basis of selecting these optionals.

• Question: Tell us something about preparation of essay paper.

Guriqbal: I read all the current affairs material and one essay book to brush my essay paper. The essay I chose “smaller States and its implication”.

• Question: How did you manage your time in both prelims and mains examinations?

Guriqbal: I was regular in studies and always kept a close watch on no. of days I have before the exam, so as to escape from last minute anxiety. 

• Question:  Which is the most difficult part of this exam and why? What was your strategy to tackle this difficult part?

Guriqbal: Interview is the most difficult part, because one cannot change his personality overnight, or can’t go on to bluff the Interview Board. There for, Siddhartha Sir from the beginning of the session used to stress on good thinking based on values, improve our personality and to be flexible in attitude.  

• Question: What was your style of writing in the exam? How was it distinct from the general writing style? How did you develop this writing style?

Guriqbal: Simple, with changing paragraph according to the change in topic more stress on diagrams and flowcharts. 

• Question: What is your advice to the freshers who are going to appear for this exam?

Guriqbal: Hard work is the panacea.
